Great shot! Are sure it's a song sparrow? It looks more like a female red winged blackbird. Not that is matters much. The shot does and its very well done.

Its feather texture looks a little weird to me. Is it the compression, overenthusiastic sharpening, or is this just how it should be?

Could be a little too much sharpening although no more than I normally do. In this case I think the bird might have still been a bit wet from a recent bath in the pond. A second image from the same series shows a similar effect on the body feathers.

You get that M 400/5.6 to work great for you. I think your right about the wet feathers, looks good to me.

Thanks OrenMc and Jimbo,

It took some getting used to but I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Anting?

Hi Tom,
lots of birds in general with black birds specific perform a ritual known
as anting, will bathe in somewhat acidic medium, take a sunbath afterward
kinda like having a dog "dipped" at the vet, rids the parasites.

Is a great shot! ,bought a copy of M400 few months ago, to be honest
didnt expect that much, just a good, solid piece, at a fair price
my biggest "good" suprize ever! I cant say enough "good" about that lens
your showing why

cheers,
Bill

Thanks for that explanation Bill. Anting eh? I'm not familiar with that term but it makes sense.

In any case I'm looking forward to seeing your results with the M400. It takes some getting used to but it is capeable of some fine results.

Cheers

Very nicely done, Tom G.
I love both shots. That lens is certainly coming in handy.
