Side Oiler
Lens: DA 35 Camera: K20D Photo Location: Richwood, TX ISO: 200 Aperture: F11

At a car show in Richwood today, I grabbed these shots of the relatively unusual Ford 427 side oiler; while not as rare as hens teeth, these essentially racing engines showed up in only a few of Ford and Mercury street cars in the mid '60's. They were too expensive to build for true mass production, so Ford developed the more pedestrian, but still strong, 428 that ended up in a variety of models - including, of course, the Mustang.

I found these shots a bit frustrating. The bright chrome surfaces, lit by a high sun, played the devil with exposure. Also, this particular mill was lodged in a '58 Ford, with a hood that is hinged at the front; thus, I wasn't able to shoot it from a more compelling perspective.

I drove a Galaxy 500 once with one of those in it. "427" with a Six Barrel. Great shots. Shame it's in a "58 and you couldn't get a head on shot of it.

Thanks for sharing this. Very nostalgic.

G'day from Aus....I think they used similar engines in the GT40 to win Lemans.
Cheers, Pickles.

Jer, I'm kind of an engine freak, and I like the looks of these photos. Nice job.

I'm glad you enjoyed looking at it, and I agree. While have unending admiration for folks that can "drop" a 427 mill from 1965 into a 1958 car, I would much rather have seen this engine nestled in its natural habitat - particularly an original 427 Cobra.

I think you're right, Pickles. I hope things are cool in Australia.

It did look like a very tricky exposure. But you nailed it, awesome shots. Any photo of the whole car?

Thanks, noel, for the very kind remarks. As it happens, the show - for whatever reason - encouraged a lot of owner-viewer discussion, so I ended up taking only 4 images, including these two. I was having too much fun gabbing with folks and didn't get around to much photography.

"Beep-Beep, your ass!"

I remember a couple of Fairlanes at the local dragstrip with this Badass combination.

The Ford 427 side oiler was originally developed for NASCAR racing and yes it was used in the Ford GT40 to race vs the Ferrari's, etc. at Le Mans in the late '60's.

The GT40 with 427 side oiler...won LeMans handily...easily beating all the exotic European cars..by virtue of it's displacement advantage, durability and sheer HP and torque.

Great engine...as you say...not common anymore.
