Mating Hover Flies
Lens: Tamron 70-300 & 60mm Extension tube Camera: K7 Photo Location: Shanghai ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/15s Aperture: F8

Just playing with the dog I spotted these two flies about to mate ..... dived inside and grabbed the K7 with Tamron 70-300, 60mm Extension tubes & Vebron rails on tripod.

I thought these were youngsters as they were only about 2 cms long (ca. 1/2 inch) , though now I know they are full grown upon hatching, but I've seen larger, so obviously more than one type of Hover Fly is inhabiting my garden !

This is heavily cropped of course (maybe 1/8 of the original), 1/15, 400 ISO, I think it was F8 (shooting in MF of course).

Great colors and bokeh! Too bad there was so little DOF

Thanks Adam !

Actually I think the other Hoverfly was OOF because of the slow shutter-speed (1/15) rather than a lack of DoF. It was obviously enjoying itself and writhing around al over the place whilst the fly on top was relatively motionless
