Garter snake
Lens: Vivitar 105mm f/2.5 Macro Camera: K-7 Photo Location: My backyard
Posted By: RBellavance, 06-14-2010, 11:57 AM

Some nice visit in my backyard ! At least 2 common garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) have made it their home, and they are not shy at all. I spent a good 15 minutes shooting this one, and did not flee.

All shot taken with a Vivitar 105mm f/2.5 Macro on my K-7, in natural light.

1. Look how pretty I am !

f/5.6, ISO 500, 1/320s

2. Posing for the camera

f/5.6, ISO 200, 1/60s

3. On the lookout

f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/125s

4. Strategic fallback

f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/200s

5. Mug shot (1:1 magnification!)

f/8.0, ISO 400, 1/180s

6. Curious

f/8.0, ISO 400, 1/100s

Those are all great shots. We have a two tone green version of him down here-call them oak snakes because they love hanging out in the oak trees.

Thanks for the comments everyone, much appreciated !

I don't mind snakes much, and I think I've convinced my wife they're mostly a good thing to have around (they're harmless to us, and they eat large insects, small rodents and frogs). And the kids are thrilled, of course !

Just so long as she knows how to tell which ones are poisonous and which ones are her friends.
