Song Sparrow Series (3 images)
Lens: SMC Pentax M 400/5.6 Camera: Pentax K10D ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/180s Aperture: F8

Managed a few shots of the Song Sparrow again today.

Not the sharpest but a near bird in flight shot as he tried to stay on the branch

Cheers

Thanks Dave.

#3 is probably the best but I like #1 for some reason.

Great photos, Tom! #3 is fantastic, but I too like #1. You've really captured motion in those flapping wings.

I can see why you like #1, it has a feel of action about it, and the birds eye and head is still in focus. A nice shot. It's also a little bit different.
#3 is great though

Hey Dave. How's things down under?

This is as close to a BIF as I've managed so far. I guess the juxtaposition of the stationary head against the blur of the wings is what appeals to me. Not a spectacular shot but as you say a little different.

Hey Tom,
Things down under are not bad, heading into winter here so it's gotten quite cool in the mornings and evenings. I'm sure it's nothing compared to Canada, but buildings and houses in Perth tend to have minimal heating, so you do feel it.
However when the weather is clear, it's very nice in the afternoon sun. In terms of lighting it's a lot less harsh than other times of the year.

Your image appeals to me in the same way, motion blur in the wings and a stationary/sharp head works well.

cheers,
Jason

Hopefully you don't have as much to shovel as we get in a normal winter in this part of the world.

In any case a correction is in order here. These images are not a Song Sparrow. This is a female Red Wing Blackbird. Duuhh!!!

Oh well - I'm a photographer (of sorts) not an ornithologist.

Excellent series. You've mastered that M400... not the easiest lens for small birds

Thanks ivoire,

I don't know about mastery but I've learned a few things working with it over the past year.

Hey Tom - these are terrific. The first one is quite different from most bird photos - very interesting. The third one is perfection itself. Great job.
