Dont know why i love the first one, i know its not a perfect shot but love it, can someone help explain this to me

I like the first one a lot too! I think it's for a few reasons:
1) The dog is looking off to the left, so you wonder what's caught its attention,
2) The background is very plain, so it doesn't distract from the subject,
3) It follows the 'rule of thirds', i.e. the dog is 1/3 of the way across horizontally, and occupies 2/3 of the frame vertically,
4) Nice use of negative space,
5) B&W is a good choice - your own conversion, or pre-cooked?

Thanks for your input, not b&w but reduced the amount of colour in the photo to near b&w, i use this setting alot as i like the raw and detailed effect it gives me. Thanks again

i also like the 1st shot better. just wondering re: what you said above, you mean you just move the saturation slider far left?
