Mating moths for Frogfish
Lens: Tokina ATX 90mm macro (I think) Camera: *istDL Photo Location: near Sackville, NB ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/90s

Inspired by Frogfish's very cool mating/egg-laying moth shots.

I have a vague feeling I may have posted these before, but I can't find the thread so maybe I'm imagining things.

These were on the front door (which we obviously don't use much!) and the lighting was terrible. I forget what I did with the flash (these were taken two years ago), I've been messing around with various means of bouncing and diffusing the flash and obviously didn't do so well this time around! The first two shots show the large, wingless female sitting on her cocoon, with two males in attendance. The males have the big antennae to find the female; she's basically a huge, wingless blob full of eggs. You can see her tiny eyes and antennae in the second shot. The last was taken the next day, it's the female laying eggs right on top of her cocoon. Never did see the caterpillars, unfortunately.

Thanks! There are so many cool things going on out in nature, you just have to go look around and you'll be overwhelmed with neat subjects. These may not be art, but they're interesting... at least to an entomologist like me!
