Eek! Can it bite with the claw in the back, or is it just there for this poor guy to look scary? I remember seeing these around the house back when it was still being built...

I knew absolutlely nothing about them other than seeing them around until I took these photos. Still not much.
I quess they can pinch with their forceps but they can't really hurt you. They like cool, dark damp places and feed off live and decaying plant life.
Thats about it

You know, I didn't know they were called "earwigs" until I got to college and was around people from other areas of the country? We just called them "pincher bugs" when we were growing up!

Thanks for the comment. I didn't actually know that earwig was a proper name until I looked it up online for these photos. Always thought it was just a kids made-up name.
It's always interesting to learn what others think, especially for me from other countries. One thing I like about this forum, I get to interact with folks around the world.
