Chance meeting with an Osprey
Lens: Pentax-M 200 f/4 Camera: K200D ISO: 400
Posted By: goddo31, 07-06-2010, 12:39 AM

On the weekend I decided to head down to a small marina for some photos with my new M-200 f/4.
By some luck I ran into an Osprey who was sitting on top of the tall light poles. Although I was wishing I brought my 400mm, I did my best with a couple of shots, most of which had some sort of issue...

1. Sitting on his light pole

2. Off for a fish!

3. Back at the perch, eating lunch

4. Time to go!

cheers,
Jason

I think you did very well here Jason. Too bad the 400 was at home.

I had a similar problem last winter. I did have the 400 mounted with its 15ft minimium focusing distance and of course a Chickadee parks itself about 2 feet from me. I could have reached out and touched the bird but no chance for an image.

Great shots for a 200mm! That last one especially is better than any I have made at 510mm.

Thanks Tom. Of course, I was tossing up whether to take the 400 on this outing.. At least I didn't decide to take wide angles only or something!
I am still quite happy that I even got to see this bird.

Thanks It is cropped a bit, but not as much as the previous photos.
A lucky shot, however I wish I hadn't blown the highlight under the wings.

cheers,
Jason

These look great to me Jason - I bought an M 200/4 back in '79 - from Sears believe it or not. It was a great lens, but I'm not sure I was as good at using it as you are.

Thanks for your kind comments Jer. I did find it quite difficult to focus the M200 f/4, nice lens to use however.
cheers,
Jason

Thanks Jan. But please realise that there was a large amount of cropping done on each of these photos.

cheers,
Jason

Beautiful pictures! To be honest though, when I read the title, I was expecting pictures of this:

Thanks dave. I had absolutely no complaints with the weather that day, or the nice rendering of the M series lens.

I didn't know those things were called Ospreys! Perhaps the "Nature" title might have tipped you off?
Thanks for the comment, made me laugh!
