These photos are from some time ago, on a visit to the little city museum here in Limerick. Like most such places in Europe it is tiny and under-funded, mostly full of items donated by residents of the locale. These sorts of museums are totally fun, as you never know what you will find.

money from the Limerick soviet

Dig anywhere and find intriguing history. There was a general strike and soviet formed in Limerick from 15 to 27 April 1919, a response to the British declaring a Special Military Area after the death of Robert Byrne, a prominent trade unionist. He had been on hunger strike in the hospital and a failed attempt was made to bust him out. Following this the British lined the funeral procession with soldiers bearing fixed bayonets!

The strike ended at the request of the church, people being fed in the meantime by special committees that ensured bread, potatoes, butter and milk got to homes. Canada supplied 7000 tons of wheat from a ship docked by special permit. Food was smuggled on the river by night and in hearses (!) from the workhouse hospital. Someone has got to make a film of this!

Shannon airport

Looks much the same now, except planes don't really bother landing there.

The last words letter is interesting. The second sentence is half the page long, lol. And I see the lower case "s" in body of a word but words starting with a "s" look like a "f". I had to read that real carefully. Thanks for the post.

Yeah, sentence breaks used to be fairly optional. And it wasn't until the advent of advertising, journalism and then the internet that they got so short.
