Bragging time for Pentax (and me) at a local contest!
Camera: K20D
Posted By: bdery, 07-15-2010, 11:05 AM

We had a photo contest at work (nothing fancier, although there are 650 people working here). about 30 photos were selected and entered in the contest. vote was open to everyone.

I ended up with the 1st, 3rd and 4th places... my three selected photos all scored in the top four!

Yay.

End of bragging time, now for some pictures. The theme was Insects.

1st rank : Seize the instant

3rd rank (shot with a Canon S2, some time ago, so no Pentax here. It's also the technically poorest of the lot): Taking flight

4th rank : Fingertips

Comments and critique welcome!

For the record, Imy favourite is Fingertips. Technically the best by far. I didn't manage to get it into the PPG, even though I thought it was a worthy entry, but there you are

Congrats on winning! The blue morph is such a difficult one to photograph with it's wings open.

Congratulations! I suspect Fingertips didn't make ppg because of the distracting bright white and blue in the background. The butterfly seems rather dully lit by comparison. It also seems a little soft, but that may be due to downsizing. But a lovely butterfly just the same!

On the other hand, I think you could really make something of the first one. Have you considered cropping out all of the oof pot and whatnot on the left? You might also crop out some of the background on the right to get rid of those bright spots. Maybe crop a little on the bottom as well - it's a K20, you've got lots of pixels to work with, right? I think the contrast of bright blue butterfly with the rusted bench is lovely, and the cropping would put the butterfly in the lower left third, balanced by the post in the upper right third. Or I might be full of it...

Technically imperfect or not, the blurred wings are very cool. Well done on all!

Nice job, love the color in the first one and the movement in the second one. We see many macro images but few that show that any kind of movement. Thanks for sharing.

The last shot is very beautiful but I like the movement on the second.

So true. This one only stayed there for a moment.

Indeed, it's very colourful and sharp when printed to 8x12.

I shot one the way you describe it. the effect is no the same, it feels less balanced.

Thanks all for the comments! Keep them coming!

Why not? someone here simply started a photo club. A contest every two months, a conference dinner every other month, and there you are. the size of the corporation should not be an issue. I believe our 650 is pretty honest

Work with a tele, or try your slow-motion and work with a macro

Sorry about the softer output. I reduce my pics to about 1 MB in size before uploading. I use Photobucket, I'm not sure if they do anything to my pics, but since they're free and work well, I play along.
