These were all shot handheld with a K110D plus Sigma 24-135mm lens. I tried JPEG for a change with saturation and sharpness up one notch and contrast at the middle setting. All shots received a little extra USM courtesy of ImageMagick.

On a few shots I added a contrast layer in The GIMP just to lighten up the foreground. Shooting straight into a fire meant I bracketed almost all shots by 2 stops either way and chose the correct exposures on the PC later on.
