An Old Lens for a Young Man Turned Old(er)
Lens: A*85/1.4 Camera: K20D Photo Location: Excrusciatingly Hot Lake Jackson, TX ISO: 100
Posted By: Sailor, 07-31-2010, 07:07 PM

On a Christmas morning about 25 years ago, my Dad presented me with a brand new A*85/1.4 lens; my folks were comfortable, but very far from wealthy - yet they unselfishly did Christmas in a big way for me, my wife and daughters. Here's a link to some pictures of the lens, which I've tried to maintain in like-new condition:

I haven't used it in a few years (it was - sort of - superseded when I got my DA 70Limited), but . . . for whatever reason . . . . . I pulled it off the shelf today. This evening, when it cooled down sufficiently to survive under the ambient conditions, I grabbed some pictures around the house, picking - for lack of better subjects - our magnolia tree (specifically buds) and my car. All of these were taken under extreme mosquito attack (I wiped the blood off before putting the car back into the garage).

Hand held at minium focusing distance; 1/4000 s@f/1.4; about 70 % cropped:

1/1000 s @ f/2.8; about 50% cropped:

The following car shots were either uncropped or only moderately so.

1/45s @ f/8:

1/180s @ f/4:

No need for jealousy , but it is a nice lens. I should use it more, but the size, light weight and convenience of my DA 70 . . . . . .

Thanks, buddy. I wish I could aim it at some of the beautiful places you've been capturing recently. It's too hot to do anything here - even go sailing. The "weather people" are promising a return of the sea breeze on Monday night or Tuesday; I'm hoping . . . . .

Thanks much - that star worked out great, although it wasn't planned.
