Swallowtails... and a few more hummingbirds with DA*300
Posted By: Bud, 08-04-2010, 06:40 PM

Hiked around a local metropark this past weekend and found a patch of Joe Pye Weed along a trail that was thick with Eastern Tiger and Giant Swallowtail butterflies.

Really love these. That last hummingbird shot is one of the coolest and unique hummingbird photos I have seen recently. Great capture!

Just out of curiosity, did you use a fill flash on these to help bring out the details? If so, was it just the onboard flash or something like the 540FGZ? P-TTL mode? Thanks!

Hard to pick a favourite from such superb pics, but I'll say that the first hummingbrid shot stands out for me.
I'd love a go with a DA*300...maybe one day...
Thanks, Mickey! The DA*300 was a huge expense for me when I got it, but has paid for itself in the sheer pleasure I have using it It's attached to my K20D around 75% of the time... 100% in the summer months.

Beautiful set. Have these been heavily cropped? Just wondering how close you were to the minimum focusing distance.

Thanks! Fill flash with Pentax 540FGZ on all of the images... P-TTL and HSS modes. Camera usually set to aperture priority and spot metering.

Thank you! Not heavily cropped... for most of these images, I think that I was within 6 feet of the target.

All I can say is WOW!!!!

Super sharp images with this lens. I just bought this same lens today, and I can't wait to get it so I can try it out. I don't think my photos will be as good as these though.

You have some uber photo skills, great job!
