The EXCLUSIVE GALLERY ("PEG") at PentaxForums
Posted By: Adam, 08-05-2010, 06:05 AM

Hello everyone,

Name: PPG_at_pentaxforums.gif
Views: 19892
Size: 5.1 KB

I am very happy to announce that an idea we've had in the back of our minds for a good while has finally been brought to life! Today we're officially unveiling the PentaxForums Exclusive Gallery, which is conceptually similar to Pentax's PPG. At first, we wanted this gallery to also appear fancy and have cool effects, but we found that other solutions wouldn't offer the level of integration that this one did. So, let's jump right in to what we're looking at here.

Our Exclusive Gallery will become a collection of only the best photos taken by our users. Only PentaxForums.com users will be able to submit to this gallery. We will also be imposing certain quality standards to make sure the photos are at their very best.

To submit a photo to the gallery, simply click the 'upload' link in the upper gallery toolbar, or click here. The submission form is the same as that in our other gallery categories, so you should already be familiar with the controls. The following will be required of each photo:
  • JPEG format and compression at 90%-100% (9-12).
  • A resolution of at least 1024x700 (WxH or HxW) pixels; preferably around 1500 or 2000px on one edge
  • Full EXIF left intact in the file, if digital
  • Manual addition of EXIF metadata, if film
  • A photo description and complete camera/lens fields
  • If you choose to place copyright text in your photo, please do so in the lower-right or lower-left corner only
  • No added frames, borders, or drawings
  • Taken with a Pentax camera (no exceptions)
  • Limit 2 submissions per user day (to be fair to our judges)
If your photo conforms to these regulations, it will then be evaluated by the site staff. If the photo is good enough, it'll be approved into the gallery; if not, we'll simply move it to a regular category. You will be able to submit as many photos as you'd like until 10 have been approved in the gallery. This limit is currently going to be in place so that every photographer gets about equal exposure, but may increase in the future.

Why this is going to be better than the PPG:
  • Not a slow flash-based gallery
  • Large resolutions will be available for your viewing pleasure
  • Comments can be made
  • More great photos will be posted!
  • Feedback on your photo will be e-mailed to you once a decision has been made
  • The approval decision will be made within 1 week at most (apply to be a judge)
  • Status tracking at https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/galleryapprove.php?do=status and updates on status via e-mail
  • It's integrated with your favorite photo forum
And, best of all:
  • If 5 or your photos get approved into the gallery, you will be invited to become an Exclusive Gallery judge
So, why wait? Upload your best now!

A note to newbies: the gallery is accessible through the 'photos' button in the navbar. Simply click it and then select 'User Photo Gallery' from the menu.

Enjoy, guys! I'm very excited to be bringing you this.

Photos accepted into the gallery will also be tagged as "exclusive" in gallery searches and listings, and within the exclusive category, supersized thumbnails will be shown!

Can I ask a question! I now have a k20d but before this I had a Samsung GX10 and some of what I would class as my better work was taken with this camera. Can I submit images with this or is it strictly Pentax only ?

Thanks
When I bought my K10d, I was told that internally it was identical to the GX10. I'm not the final word but I don't see why not.

Similar but not quite the same - GX10 vs K10D and GX20 vs K20D, very subtle differences in image processing but essentially, this is a Pentax/Samsung forum since the processor within these cameras are the same and Samsung supplied the sensors to Pentax for these generation of cameras.

I've been submitting pics to PEG. If accepted will feel happy if not I'll base on the constructive comments & try to improve & resubmit again.
Recently I have a pic rejected with this comments :

Below you will find comments on your photo. You might want to re-submit an edited version of your photo depending on the circumstances!
Nice composition
Nice DoF
Nice pose! A

I was puzzled the pic rejected when there's no negative/constructive comments?
Anyone has any idea?

You should probably throw your photo up for critique in the critique forum The bar for the EG is pretty high at the moment due to the large number of submissions.

kengoh: I love that shrike! Nice capture!

I suppose not all the judges are as partial to great bird shots as I am...

I haven't tried submitting anything yet, but seeing that one rejected maybe I shouldn't. All my best shots are of birds.

Indeed it can make judging more difficult/stricter when there are several submissions of the same genre, let alone the same subject.

I also think might be too many submissions..so the voting stardard also raised but if every vote is positive without any negative voting, how come still rejected is something I really don't understand.

Few more cases...

Case 1:
pic:
Oriental Pied Hornbill - Pentax User Photo Gallery

Very Nice, yes vote!
Nice shot and a bit comical!
Looks like he/she did not get dressed right!
Nice PoF
Nice composition. A
Perfect capture!

This one got rejected becos of the comment Looks like he/she did not get dressed right! ?

Case 2:
pic:

Good sharpness and clarity. It would be a yes if it were not for the slightly distracting spider web alongside the twig.

IMHO I felt that there's nothing wrong since it's part of nature?
Was wondering if I really remove them will the pic be accepted?
This is rather discouraging as I can see other accepted bird pic with messy twigs & branches.

Recevied 2 feedback to submit other pics instead of birds but birding is my main interest as 95% of my pics are bird shots.

How to link PEG to family members? I would like to show my family my accepted photos but when I go to PEG, it shows me what I can do there, et.al, upload photos, etc.

Thanks & glad you like the shrike pic.
Same like you, I shoot birds more than other things.

One of my favorite series (got 100% 6 votes 5 stars at this time of posting):
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/137579-nature-laced-woodpecker.html
I submitted pic #1 got rejected reason being not sharp on the fur of the neck.
The fur of this bird on the neck area in real fact is soft, so technically I don't know how to get it sharp.

So I resubmitted #6 & got this:
Great sharpness
Great colors
Great pose
Great shot!
Sharp capture of this interesting bird. It doesn't quite have the 'wow' factor of a previous portrait capture of the same bird.

I got 200+ shots of this bird & I really don't know which pic should I re-submit next?

I feel that the judging committe lack of some nature or bird photographers.

#6 has "wow factor" to me for sure.

I just read through another thread in here called "Why is nature photography so boring?" and I suspect that might be the problem: Art only works if it evokes emotion. Nature scenes, bird scenes in particular, do that to me. So, a stunning bird photo gives me a much stronger experience than a stunning architecture shot, or a shot of rusty hinges on an old door.

I agree with you - there might be a need of a nature lover or two among the judges. Or, of course, they might agree with the "nature photography is boring" stance, and want to keep it that way... ;-)

Ken, you have a number of PEG acceptances.
It is expected that your chosen genre will have limited appeal and indeed will need much more than a technically sound image to invoke emotion in the audience, as we've seen before.

Also understand that images are not accepted just because of one vote or one negative comment. The voter providing the 'negative' remark just had the guts (or the words) to justify their vote, so it's unwarranted singling out such a voter. It takes more than one 'no' vote to reject an image.

The PEG panel shouldn't have to appeal to a single genre for the sake of all your bird shots, Ken. You know you're a good photographer, you don't need PEG to accommodate for all of avian photography. Again, you have a fair few of your bird images already accepted in PEG, these should count for something.

Finally, please reserve these posts and comments for the PEG Rejects thread.

Thanks Jeff. I just took her to the PentaxForums home page and we navigated to PEG from there. Then of course we browsed others photos also.

Why do you want to get further images accepted into the PEG?

There is no prestige; you would have to submit to proper contests with professional judges to be able to claim that an acceptance means something.

Acceptance decisions for the PEG are obviously governed not only by the merit of a photo. Adam said that many submissions raise the standard so it is not just about how good an individual photo is. I don't quite understand this part because Adam also said the PEG was about "beautiful photos to look at" and the latter can be achieved without raising standards when submission numbers rise. If the idea were to get the "best" only then surely one would have to revisit previous acceptances and replace them with newer submissions that exceed them in quality. The "changing the criteria on the fly" approach doesn't make much sense to me. But maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

The PEG has its advantages and disadvantages. People tried to change it before and failed. So if I were you, I wouldn't mind about the rejects. They don't really say a lot about your work and what it should mean to you.

That last shot is fantastic! That negative comment is rather pathetic IMO...... I actually searched the image expecting a distracting spider web but saw nothing. It actually took me a good couple of minutes to realize it was the little white strings on the twig itself. Give me a break
