The EXCLUSIVE GALLERY ("PEG") at PentaxForums
Posted By: Adam, 08-05-2010, 06:05 AM

Hello everyone,

Name: PPG_at_pentaxforums.gif
Views: 19892
Size: 5.1 KB

I am very happy to announce that an idea we've had in the back of our minds for a good while has finally been brought to life! Today we're officially unveiling the PentaxForums Exclusive Gallery, which is conceptually similar to Pentax's PPG. At first, we wanted this gallery to also appear fancy and have cool effects, but we found that other solutions wouldn't offer the level of integration that this one did. So, let's jump right in to what we're looking at here.

Our Exclusive Gallery will become a collection of only the best photos taken by our users. Only PentaxForums.com users will be able to submit to this gallery. We will also be imposing certain quality standards to make sure the photos are at their very best.

To submit a photo to the gallery, simply click the 'upload' link in the upper gallery toolbar, or click here. The submission form is the same as that in our other gallery categories, so you should already be familiar with the controls. The following will be required of each photo:
  • JPEG format and compression at 90%-100% (9-12).
  • A resolution of at least 1024x700 (WxH or HxW) pixels; preferably around 1500 or 2000px on one edge
  • Full EXIF left intact in the file, if digital
  • Manual addition of EXIF metadata, if film
  • A photo description and complete camera/lens fields
  • If you choose to place copyright text in your photo, please do so in the lower-right or lower-left corner only
  • No added frames, borders, or drawings
  • Taken with a Pentax camera (no exceptions)
  • Limit 2 submissions per user day (to be fair to our judges)
If your photo conforms to these regulations, it will then be evaluated by the site staff. If the photo is good enough, it'll be approved into the gallery; if not, we'll simply move it to a regular category. You will be able to submit as many photos as you'd like until 10 have been approved in the gallery. This limit is currently going to be in place so that every photographer gets about equal exposure, but may increase in the future.

Why this is going to be better than the PPG:
  • Not a slow flash-based gallery
  • Large resolutions will be available for your viewing pleasure
  • Comments can be made
  • More great photos will be posted!
  • Feedback on your photo will be e-mailed to you once a decision has been made
  • The approval decision will be made within 1 week at most (apply to be a judge)
  • Status tracking at https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/galleryapprove.php?do=status and updates on status via e-mail
  • It's integrated with your favorite photo forum
And, best of all:
  • If 5 or your photos get approved into the gallery, you will be invited to become an Exclusive Gallery judge
So, why wait? Upload your best now!

A note to newbies: the gallery is accessible through the 'photos' button in the navbar. Simply click it and then select 'User Photo Gallery' from the menu.

Enjoy, guys! I'm very excited to be bringing you this.

Photos accepted into the gallery will also be tagged as "exclusive" in gallery searches and listings, and within the exclusive category, supersized thumbnails will be shown!

Although the gallery says that there is a size limit of about 2.5 MB, all photos larger than 1MB are rejected? At least mine are... so I will send in photos below 1MB only!
They shouldn't be, but I haven't tested this. It might be because the parent category of that gallery has regular limits. I will update that now, and let me know if that fixes the problem.

@Adam, Any chance you could change the max file size on these uploads to be more substantial? If we're going to evaluate high res data, 2.5mbytes seems small.

With that limitation, I'll have to post process my jpegs.
I don't think there's any point in uploading something larger than 2000x1300, unless, of course, it's a pano. If you have a file that's at 90% compression and at this resolution, and larger than the limit, I'll be able to accomodate.

Adam, this is very nice. And since everything I have ever submitted has received abject rejection, I'm leery of uploading anything. Is there any way we can just point to our files currently on the PF site?

Is there any way to tell when you've been rejected? I see no way of checking your image status, one thing PPG has on ya
Yes- simply check your uploaded photos to see if you've been moved to a regular gallery category.

Most of the photos I published online does not have EXIF Any possibilities to upload them?
If your photo is accepted, I will send you a PM and we can take it from there. If not, then you'll be able to edit it on your own in a different section of the gallery.

So will there be feedback on why a photo was not accepted?
Also, Exiftool is quite useful for importing/modifying exif data, just in case whatever post-processing software you are using has stripped the exif. I think it is only functional from the command line, but it's pretty straightforward.
Sorry, generally no feedback- it's a mammoth task to go through all the photos to begin with! I will however post comments if a photo was almost accepted.

I will say this, though: generally, if we see that mistakes in a photo can be fixed through PP, then it'll be rejected. There have been quite a few winning shots with busy edges or poor crops that might have otherwise made it in.

So, what protection is being provided to prevent people from downloading our large images and printing/using them without our permission?

I don't think that 'Internet' and 'Image Protection' can be used together in one sentence. If someone wants to jack your images, they'll do it no matter where you've posted them.

Very cool idea, especially if you do manage to come up with some sort of special presentation mode. I am in the process of readying a new website to highlight my best images for sale, so this project came at the right time for me... I've selected from a pool of 3000 photos based on viewer comments and awards received.

hi

although there are methods to mark up your images before uploading them anywhere on the Internet, there are no guarantees they cannot be stolen.

however, many professional photographers dealing with the Internet on a daily basis, believe that as long as you don't upload your pix in their original size / resolution and resize them down in both mentioned aspects, then it should be ok since you still have the original and if needed, you can then prove the image is yours.

sounds reasonable enough to me but watermarks, if done properly, are probably still the best way to protect your own rights as the original owner of the picture especially when combined with the resizing method.

hope this helps.

best,
PR

Great idea and keen to try my hand....but I'm getting a 404 error whenever I click either hyper-link.

Any user gallery seems to be 404 at the moment.

The link in the first post is giving the 404.

And now the ability to upload photos is also lost due to an internal server error...

Unfortunately, my internet shit the bed for a good while, which really slowed down the fixing of an otherwise trivial (but nevertheless serious) problem. All should be well now, with the added bonus of prettier image URLs

That is great!

How are pictures "judged"?
Are PP'd pictures immediately rejected?

I can't hardly wait to see some more.
That promises to be much more interesting than Pentax Photo Gallery.
By the looks of them, those pictures posted already are, for the most part, excellent.
Cheers!

JP

Is there an average time span on how long it takes to either approve or move to a normal category? I only ask because I recently submitted two pictures and one was moved to the Nature category and the other is no where to be found. Just curious! I apologize if you guys are just really busy and haven't gotten to it yet, but I'm anxious!

just an observation. I like galleries like this when they don't allow shots with added borders. Eventually if people use them it's going to play havoc with how they look once you skin and slick up the gallery. Borderless eliminates the issue to my eye. And yeah, I know there is already a shot with a border. Like the shot but not the border.

Just an observation not a knock of the goal here...should be nice for those who choose to participate and those of us who already are enjoying the wonderful shots in there already.

I also like there is the ability to discuss the shot with either the shooter or others. Hope folks keep that part civil...it's all about fun, right?

And thanks for requiring EXIF...how else are people like me going to get a nice feel for how settings can be used to their best effect, even if every situation is different, it helps me understand what is reasonable to expect and plan with that in mind.
