The EXCLUSIVE GALLERY ("PEG") at PentaxForums
Posted By: Adam, 08-05-2010, 06:05 AM

Hello everyone,

Name: PPG_at_pentaxforums.gif
Views: 19892
Size: 5.1 KB

I am very happy to announce that an idea we've had in the back of our minds for a good while has finally been brought to life! Today we're officially unveiling the PentaxForums Exclusive Gallery, which is conceptually similar to Pentax's PPG. At first, we wanted this gallery to also appear fancy and have cool effects, but we found that other solutions wouldn't offer the level of integration that this one did. So, let's jump right in to what we're looking at here.

Our Exclusive Gallery will become a collection of only the best photos taken by our users. Only PentaxForums.com users will be able to submit to this gallery. We will also be imposing certain quality standards to make sure the photos are at their very best.

To submit a photo to the gallery, simply click the 'upload' link in the upper gallery toolbar, or click here. The submission form is the same as that in our other gallery categories, so you should already be familiar with the controls. The following will be required of each photo:
  • JPEG format and compression at 90%-100% (9-12).
  • A resolution of at least 1024x700 (WxH or HxW) pixels; preferably around 1500 or 2000px on one edge
  • Full EXIF left intact in the file, if digital
  • Manual addition of EXIF metadata, if film
  • A photo description and complete camera/lens fields
  • If you choose to place copyright text in your photo, please do so in the lower-right or lower-left corner only
  • No added frames, borders, or drawings
  • Taken with a Pentax camera (no exceptions)
  • Limit 2 submissions per user day (to be fair to our judges)
If your photo conforms to these regulations, it will then be evaluated by the site staff. If the photo is good enough, it'll be approved into the gallery; if not, we'll simply move it to a regular category. You will be able to submit as many photos as you'd like until 10 have been approved in the gallery. This limit is currently going to be in place so that every photographer gets about equal exposure, but may increase in the future.

Why this is going to be better than the PPG:
  • Not a slow flash-based gallery
  • Large resolutions will be available for your viewing pleasure
  • Comments can be made
  • More great photos will be posted!
  • Feedback on your photo will be e-mailed to you once a decision has been made
  • The approval decision will be made within 1 week at most (apply to be a judge)
  • Status tracking at https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/galleryapprove.php?do=status and updates on status via e-mail
  • It's integrated with your favorite photo forum
And, best of all:
  • If 5 or your photos get approved into the gallery, you will be invited to become an Exclusive Gallery judge
So, why wait? Upload your best now!

A note to newbies: the gallery is accessible through the 'photos' button in the navbar. Simply click it and then select 'User Photo Gallery' from the menu.

Enjoy, guys! I'm very excited to be bringing you this.

Photos accepted into the gallery will also be tagged as "exclusive" in gallery searches and listings, and within the exclusive category, supersized thumbnails will be shown!

They were never submitted and they were posted to my gallery months ago, back in March, way before PEG.
This makes me wonder if the admin is browsing photos and slipping them in, through the "back door", surreptitiously.

How else can pictures not deliberately entered by the owner find their way in?

Flawed site script files? Either the script files have some flaws / holes in them, or there is some Admin "assistance" being provided... What is needed is for more members to come forward if one of their photos is "submitted" without them actually taking any action.

What would be the point of admin submitting a photo for the purpose of rejecting it?

The admin is not involved in the judging of the images submitted to the PEG. There are a group of our peers who were chosen to be judges after expressing interest in acting as such.

As far as I know the admin (Adam), and his father (Ole) who is also an admin, do not participate in the judging of photos submitted to the PEG.

I only tossed out the comment that it may have been possible that they might have done so. One can only speculate as to the reasons they would do such a thing.

It may also be possible that there is a flaw in the script files as whitelotus9 suggests.

Who knows?

The thing is, if a member is positive that they did not submit a picture to PEG, it may be a good thing to contact the admin via PM and say so.

I must sound like some sort of emotional jellyfish but really, I'm not. I just react very negatively to artistic competition because I'm not competing and don't want to be viewed as doing so.
Your complaint is perfectly justified IMO. Getting rejected from a competition, gallery, or whatever that you had no interest in entering is pretty uncalled for. For that matter, getting accepted and put in the gallery without your consent would also have been uncalled for. Hopefully this was a computer glitch that can be sorted.

Ahhhh, that makes perfect sense.

It sounds like a computer glitch. Racer X's explanation of how the process works seems to point to a computer glitch.

Who knows, maybe I'll enter a contest with a cool gadget as a prize someday. Never say never, right? For now, though, I'm happy being a non-combatant.

My guess would be that the user inadvertently selected the Exclusive gallery from the drop down list of categories when uploading the photo into the gallery.

I'd like to ask the judges on here one question: what determines whether or not I get feedback on an image via emai?

I was surprised to see some of what I had uploaded in landscape folder flagged as rejected when I did not ask for a review.

I've tried about a dozen times, got 3 accepted, and only got two emails (both on rejected photos).

All kidding aside. I'm not going to submit any photos to PEG for awhile, if ever.
It works for me. Like you, I photograph for my own pleasure and to my own taste and technical standards. I had my 15 minutes of fame a few years back (actual won something in a photo contest) and that was sufficient.

That being said, I continue to function as a judge for PEG mostly because my standards and taste ARE a little off from convention.

I stand corrected. I found all images I have posted in non-PEG gets screened for its eligibility for PEG and gets flagged rejected within a few hours to a few days (with no reasons given). I assumed it was a flaw of some sort.

Every panel of judges should have one.

Yep, my Flickr stream has the usual flowers and waterfalls and stuff, but sprinkled in are dead birds, tortured teddy bears, and frantic drizzle-soaked hula hooping...
