The EXCLUSIVE GALLERY ("PEG") at PentaxForums
Posted By: Adam, 08-05-2010, 06:05 AM

Hello everyone,

Name: PPG_at_pentaxforums.gif
Views: 19892
Size: 5.1 KB

I am very happy to announce that an idea we've had in the back of our minds for a good while has finally been brought to life! Today we're officially unveiling the PentaxForums Exclusive Gallery, which is conceptually similar to Pentax's PPG. At first, we wanted this gallery to also appear fancy and have cool effects, but we found that other solutions wouldn't offer the level of integration that this one did. So, let's jump right in to what we're looking at here.

Our Exclusive Gallery will become a collection of only the best photos taken by our users. Only PentaxForums.com users will be able to submit to this gallery. We will also be imposing certain quality standards to make sure the photos are at their very best.

To submit a photo to the gallery, simply click the 'upload' link in the upper gallery toolbar, or click here. The submission form is the same as that in our other gallery categories, so you should already be familiar with the controls. The following will be required of each photo:
  • JPEG format and compression at 90%-100% (9-12).
  • A resolution of at least 1024x700 (WxH or HxW) pixels; preferably around 1500 or 2000px on one edge
  • Full EXIF left intact in the file, if digital
  • Manual addition of EXIF metadata, if film
  • A photo description and complete camera/lens fields
  • If you choose to place copyright text in your photo, please do so in the lower-right or lower-left corner only
  • No added frames, borders, or drawings
  • Taken with a Pentax camera (no exceptions)
  • Limit 2 submissions per user day (to be fair to our judges)
If your photo conforms to these regulations, it will then be evaluated by the site staff. If the photo is good enough, it'll be approved into the gallery; if not, we'll simply move it to a regular category. You will be able to submit as many photos as you'd like until 10 have been approved in the gallery. This limit is currently going to be in place so that every photographer gets about equal exposure, but may increase in the future.

Why this is going to be better than the PPG:
  • Not a slow flash-based gallery
  • Large resolutions will be available for your viewing pleasure
  • Comments can be made
  • More great photos will be posted!
  • Feedback on your photo will be e-mailed to you once a decision has been made
  • The approval decision will be made within 1 week at most (apply to be a judge)
  • Status tracking at https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/galleryapprove.php?do=status and updates on status via e-mail
  • It's integrated with your favorite photo forum
And, best of all:
  • If 5 or your photos get approved into the gallery, you will be invited to become an Exclusive Gallery judge
So, why wait? Upload your best now!

A note to newbies: the gallery is accessible through the 'photos' button in the navbar. Simply click it and then select 'User Photo Gallery' from the menu.

Enjoy, guys! I'm very excited to be bringing you this.

Photos accepted into the gallery will also be tagged as "exclusive" in gallery searches and listings, and within the exclusive category, supersized thumbnails will be shown!

I think photos taken by other camera brands should not be submitted to this forum. I have and use both Canon and Chinon cameras but do not think membership in this forum qualifies for my Canon photos as well. There are many other forums around the net that we can publish our photos there. The nice thing about a brand spesific forum is that the viewer get a feeling of the specific brand's camera and lenses.

Adam, would the lower-left corner be ok too? That's LR's default.

While a lot of our site events and galleries are open to photos taken with non-Pentax cameras, the exclusive gallery and monthly contest are already not

I suppose that would be OK if others feel the same way. Thoughts?

If we post vertical images, should we resize them to 1000x1500 max, or to anythingx1000?

Adam, I think what he means is keep the sizing and formatting the same as PPG as users might have a work flow that is already set up for this.

As for dismissing the potential of harvesting images (as in May of 2010 where imagelogr.com stripped millions of images from Flickr), it's a real beast to grab images en-masse if they are inside of Flash (as is the case with PPG).

No, that's easy. Flash reads the images via http and has the URL in its parameter set. To grab single images if they are inside of Flash is difficult though.

In the case of PPG, you have to analyze PPG's /consumer/files/flash/ppg.swf to retrieve the URLs for a given artist-ID (or use a TCP monitor).

It's up to you; I've only set the minimum limits.

What are those regulations? I don't have access to them right now.

But there is sooo much detail lost when downsizing a 10meg [raw] image to 600 vertical pix. I'm really happy Adam recognizes this and is hosting hi-rez versions of our photos.

Veto

I veto the selection process to the exclusive gallery.

I've been provided with examples of stunning photography which was rejected and I see accepted images of a mediocre quality. And to say that every member will end up having 10 images means that it is no honour to be in this gallery. This is no gallery then!

Therefore, I ask that the selection process be transparent or I'll ignore the feature.

Who is in the jury, why, and what are the documented criteria?

And I seriously have to ask:

What about all the great photography selected in the monthly challenges (first to third places) and photos which received many and high ratings already?

Hey Ya Falk,

I think you might have misread the thing about number of photos. It isn't that every member promied they will have 10 photos but the upper limit each member is allocated, for now, will be 10 shots. Then after a significant number of people have 10 images, or maybe there just are not enough submissions worthy of a best-of-the-best gallery, the upper limit could be revisited.

At least that is how I read Adam's post.

I know I won't be submitting images simply because I don't shoot the sort of things others find interesting. Shots I like yeah, but they are basically blown off by most people. Plus as a rule they really aren't that good...still I enjoy them and don't mind sharing them in lense threads but they really aren't what I would call Gallery worthy. Plus who knows I could drop dead tomorrow so that is a whole 10 slots which will go unused.

If you don't like the procedures used for the exclusive gallery, you don't have to participate. My goal is to make the gallery contain only the best of the best as brecklundin said.

I made a special gallery for all the monthly photo contest winners just a few days ago too- see here.

I see nothing wrong with copyrights being in the lower left. When I am not restricted by gallery rules, I have been putting my copyright in the corner where it would be least intrusive but still visible.
