Some Egret Shots
Posted By: palmor, 08-14-2010, 09:13 AM

My usual disclaimer that these were not taken with a Pentax camera

I was trying to get some in flight Tern shots that didn't really pan out but while I was waiting an Egret landed right in front of me. The 1st few with the bare EF 400mm f/5.6L and the last few I added a Kenko 1.4x TC.

Canon EOS-1D Mark III ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM
1/5000s f/5.6 at 400.0mm iso400

Canon EOS-1D Mark III ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM
1/5000s f/5.6 at 400.0mm iso400

Canon EOS-1D Mark III ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM
1/4000s f/5.6 at 400.0mm iso400

Canon EOS-1D Mark III ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM + Kenko 1.4xTC
1/2500s f/9.0 at 560.0mm iso400

Canon EOS-1D Mark III ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM + Kenko 1.4xTC
1/2000s f/9.0 at 560.0mm iso400

Canon EOS-1D Mark III ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM + Kenko 1.4xTC
1/2500s f/9.0 at 560.0mm iso400

And the token Tern
Canon EOS-1D Mark III ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM + Kenko 1.4xTC
1/2000s f/8.0 at 560.0mm iso400

These are magnificent. Great captures. Love the sharpness. Seems like a beauty of a lens for birding.

Somewhat intrigued by IS question. I'm not very familiar with Canon kit, but from internet it seems this lens is sans IS..? If so are these hand held shooting at 400mm and 560mm??...presume very fast SS helps with shake.

Those look great john!
BTW, I was thinking of selling a few things to pick up a used 1D III and would like to know how you like it compared to the 40D or 50D? I'm using a 50D now (after my 40D died) but I kind of liked the files from the 40D better, but do like the AF microadjust for my lenses. It would be nice to AF with the 400mm and a TC. up at conowingo this winter.
(Sorry for the Off topic)

Excellent series, I love the water surface - so beautiful background to that white egret!

Great detail instead of blow out on big white birds in the Sun. Not easy to shoot. Well done. I love blue sky reflection instead of the muddy green I am dealing with at home.

That is correct, the 400L f/5.6 does not have IS. All the 400mm shots were hand held and some of the 560mm shots were as well (I don't remember which ones were or weren't). The lens is pretty light for a 400mm and is fairly easy to handhold so I don't miss having IS all that much.

Hi Borno,
The only thing that is comparable between the 40d and 1d III is the LCD screen, they are both useless LOL Everything is just better with the 1d III, faster/better AF, micro adjust, dual card slots.... etc etc etc. I'm really liking the quality of the photos as well. Not sure I can explain exactly what I'm liking better but there is real nice quality about them.

The comparison is a little closer to my 7d. AF on the 1d seems a tad faster but not a huge difference. The AF options and menus are similar between the two (each having a few features the other doesn't).

Thanks for the info John, I'm hoping my ebay sales pick up and I'll be able to swing it without selling the 31mm.
