Danger Pay
Posted By: daacon, 08-26-2007, 08:55 AM

This was taken from the Gondola on our way up to Ealge's Nest resturant (7700ft) at Golden's ski resort. It just freaked me out and I was just looking. I can't imagine actually working in that unit !

Cool shot! A parachute might be better than a roll cage.

wow - that's just craziness. Awesome image though, really gives a feel of how precarious a situation that machine is in. Are the surrounding mountains as steep as that photo gives you the feel of?

Chris I think it would be about a 4-5k ft drop - even with a roll cage I think if it fell they would have to meant at the bottom by the moritition

Thanks Jeff - yep a parachute would definitely be more appropriate !

Thanks Dan and yes those mountains are steep indeed. I will see if I have some other angles to show a fall would last until you reached bottom !

Thanks Marc - yeah I would hope some sort of premium is paid - I wonder how the heck they got the machine up there ? Must of been a helicopter ...

No one, and I say NO ONE would ever get me into that thing! Just looking at the picture already gives me the shivers!

Good capture Dave! You caught the precariousness of the situation.

I hear ya Heinrich - I use to be a "Rig Pig" and worked as a Derrick hand , catching double stands of pipe danging 100 feet off a platform (saftey rope and vest ) no real fear of heights here either - but operating that machine on that ledge is just crazy!

Wow, that's a shot! I'm terrified of heights when I'm not strapped in, but if I was strapped to this and looking over?!? I'm just getting wobbly looking at it!

BTW - what are machines like that doing up there anyway?

That's one big vehicle to be driving on such tenuous earth... heights are just not my thing... but, it's a darn nifty shot!

I'm trying to figure out how he got there. If he came from the right edge, as his progress tends to indicate, he would've been backing down a particularly nasty slope. I don't see any tracks coming from the left, either, to indicate that he came up from the left.

I've done my share of rock hopping on the edge of small hills and 14er's, but I was always in command of my own feet. That just gives me the heebies.

Thanks Alvin - I am not sure what it was doing up there. A conversation starter at least !

Thanks Eric . I have to guess it was flown up there - I don't see any easy access points

That is one great shot Dave.....I'm getting vertigo just looking at it!!
The tyre tracks would suggest he has come in from the RHS.
Cheers
