Ahhhh! Golden Hour...
Posted By: Tom Lusk, 08-30-2007, 04:45 PM

I always wondered what the term Golden Hour meant when applied to photography.

I think I figured it out a few minutes ago...

Excuse the noise and the hot pixel - 2 minute PP'ing at its worst!

Tom,
I love the bokeh. Nice pciture.
Golden Hour is often a magical time for photographs. I've gotten good pic's all times of the day, but my best consistently comes during the golden hour.

Eaglerapids, with a comment like that are you trying to force me into searching all your posts and proving to you that you have some talent
That's not a nice thing to do

Tom, I can't wait to join you in the birding department when Pentax finally releases their 300mm DA* 4 and the new teleconverter.

Again you've done a mervelous job and even with the slight noise it's an excellent shot so stop worrying about it!

Wow

Fantastic is the word, Tom. Great work, and yes it is the golden hour, however I had thought of something else, the last hour before sunset, when the light is divine. This works too!

cheers,
-Asad

What did you make for the bird to actually "pose" for you?
Congrats.

Fantastic photo!

And 'hot pixels' must be something that only experienced photographers notice because I can't even see what you are talking about!

Thanks, everyone!

Thanks for all the encouragement.

The one problem I find with early morning/late evening photography of any wildlife is that I must bump the ISO from 200 to 400 to keep the shutter speed reasonable (it normally stays at 200 otherwise) and this introduces noise into the equation. I prefer doing as little PP'ing as possible (and don't have the skills).

Chris: With the QC problems in Viet Nam, hopefully (and regretfully) the DA*300 won't be coming along any time soon. Hopefully because it would be sad to see that lens introduced with problems. And regretfully because there is a pent-up demand for longer primes.

I'll be sticking with my FA* anyways. I don't believe any new lens will be able to touch it for IQ.

After seeing the quality from the 50-135 DA* I'm excited because in a test between it and a Canon 30D w/ 70-200 2.8 the DA* was sharper and rendered the picture much nicer so I could only imagine what the 300mm DA* will be able to do. Not too mention the price tag for the IS 70-200 is ridiculous compared to the 50-135.

I can understand the quality control issues, but after working at a Camera store for a month now and looked through the repair file I see a larger amount of other gear besides Pentax going in for focus issues or just random quality control things plus we sell more Pentax than anything else so it's kinda nice to know there aren't a lot of complaints on our turf.
