Life threatening sex
Lens: Panagor 90/2.8 Camera: K20d ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F19

I saw this male Garden Spider (right) approaching a fat lady in front of our kitchen window. It's quite dangerous for him to get to her, because there is the risk to be included in lunch if she's not ready. After some attempts, he didn't want to risk his life and he left without doing the deed. Probably later this afternoon....

Great photos! She definitely looks aggressive in the second one. Did you stay on the scene to see what would happen later? Where'd you find this?

As with the separately posted shot of the female, these are about as good as macro gets. Especially good job getting both male & female in the same plane of focus. Even at f19, this takes some care.

Thank you Adam! Yes, but the male went away and didn't return. In the end I believe they mated: they came very close, and the they touched with legs and pedipalps. No shots of that, however...

Excellent! I like both, but think the second is just a tad better because she's rearing back. They're really sharp and the color is lovely.

Wow! She's not very subtle hulling up the slack to pull him in.
