The end of summer
Lens: Panagor 90/2.8 Camera: K20d ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F11

In August and September, the colonies of the socioal wasps of the genus Vespula
start to disassociate and the individual wasps start roaming around, in search for
sweet food. They are attracted to lemonade and fruits etc., and this is the moment
they start to be annoying. This time of year, they end their lives, and it's one of the
signs of the end of summer.

We must have a colony nearby somewhere, because every day we find many dead
and nearly dead wasps at the stairs to our attic. I saved one - for just a little time -
and feeded it with a bit of honey. It's the only way to let them sit still enough to
make photos. It won't help: it's the way of nature, and this specimen will be dead at
the end of day. Just to remind me the end of summer is near, and winter will come....

In hope of a new summer

Another fantastic shot, Rense, and certainly not your ordinary insect shot!

Great shot. Also a great gesture to a dying wasp I'm sure he was quite happy.

Wonderful shot, lyrical in a way. I only should say that I envy you a bit, Rense, 'cause here summer is very much at large.

Another fine macro shot. The foreground & background are excellent compliments to the yellow of the wasp. Getting an insect to feed on something can be useful for getting them still enough to frame and focus. Had good luck with a striped horsefly by offering it a drop of molasses, but that was years back, a slide, so I'll need a scan to post it.

Great picture again Rense!
The colours are very nice, and also the sharpness is perfect!

The only thing that bothers me a bit is the sadness of your story!
Don't go into a winter-depression yet
