Fire Dancer
Lens: Tamron 70-300 Camera: K10D Photo Location: Kauai ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 2s

Here are two versions of a fire dancer taken at a luau on Kauai. The camera was set at aperture preferred, matrix metering, ISO 1600 (it was at night with poor stage lighting at best, and none for this performer), then just triggered. The aperture was varied to get shutter speeds from about 1/6 up to this two second exposure exposure. Variable amounts of the fire batons were recorded - some of the shorter images are also interesting.
During PP the highlights were darkened to get more detail in the fire streams. The first shot has a modest amount of darkening, to a point I would regard as "natural." The second version has the highlights darkened to the maximum possible by Aperture, which brought out some green coloration that I don't remember seeing at the time of the show, but in the image I found more interesting and intriguing than the "natural" rendition. I'd be interested to know what others think.

I like the natural one better, because the fire looks hotter. And the details in the dancer are better, I think....
Nice shot, certainly given the circumstances!!!

I agree with Rense!
I prefer the natural one. The fire looks more real, in the second picture the fire is almost cartoon like!
