Looks like a big yellow species of salsify (genus Tragopogon), also called goatsbeard (but that name also applied to totally unrelated flowers) or oyster plant ( a smaller species). It's an introduced alien from Europe. Here in the States the big yellow form is found mostly in the Pacific Northwest, but other species occur all the way into New England. Could be that it is Tragopogon, but the common name in Australia is dandelion, a name used the the USA for a totally different plant.
