Feeding Time @ 600mm - an opportunity for both of us!
Camera: K10D Photo Location: My Garden (NW Arkansas) ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F5.6
Posted By: Marc Langille, 09-27-2010, 08:40 PM

First off, I do not recommend shooting @ 1/200 sec. at 600mm - the light was low, in a very shaded area. This sparrow was taking advantage of the grass going to seed in my garden in an even more shaded area while I was photographing the hummingbirds.

Unfortunately Mr/Mrs. Sparrow spent a lot of time well hidden from the lens, but I managed to squeeze of several shots - here's one of several that I hope you think will make the grade.

Feeding Time:

EXIF

Summary: taken wide open at F/5.6, EV 0, M Mode, center weighted metering. Cropped to 2768 x 1850 pixels. AFAIK, subject was approximately 6-8m or 20-25ft away.

NOTE: Just click on the image to load the original image size I linked to, then click it again to ensure you see correctly in your web browser. Otherwise it may appear a tad soft in this post - an effect of the forum software resizing the image. I hope you enjoy the image!

Regards,
Marc

Make the grade??? No Marc, its terrible, terrible, terrible. No big glass is that nice wide open. You must have been using a Canon.

Ok, all seriousness aside. Its beautiful, color and focus both. Catching her with seeds in her beak make the event. Yeah, I like it.

Thank you Lee and yes, I'm trying to find some limits when shooting wide open... other than shallow DOF, I'll let you know when I find them!!

Cheers,
Marc

... wait a minute...

Thanks Jim. It's an amazing lens - with good technique, even though it's in body SR, the results/details are almost astonishing for a zoom.
