Paid shoot: glamour photography!
Posted By: hamidlmt, 09-12-2007, 11:25 PM

well... glamorously furry! And, I'm getting a few bucks out of this shoot. My artist friend will be turning one of these into a painting/carving.. she does really nice work and has based most of her dog portraits off my photography. We've finally decided to take it to the next level and partner up. Prints of the photos will also be available to little Skipper's owners.

These were taken with the K10D and Tamron 28-75mm 2.8... all using natural light from the wall-sized window at a doggie daycare.

I find the DOF a bit to shallow - the nose is a bit too blurred for me. I also find it a bit distracting that I can't see the dog's right eye in any of the photos.

It is a cute dog though, and I like the angles you have used.

When taking the shot, I was thinking... gee.. it must be annoying for this dog to have hair over that one eye all the time. And, then I thought... well, looks like a little furry pirate dog.

I use shallow depth of fields... nearly always.... a stylistic choice that I enjoy. Thanks for your thoughts!

I'm all for shallow depth of field, especially in portrait work. But I prefer when the bokeh is in the background, not the foreground - and unfortunately dogs have noses that a fair distance infront of their eyes, causing bokeh on the nose. For this reason, I'd still go a shallow DOF, but not quite as shallow.

As you said though - it all comes down to personal preference, and style.

You need to put a little pirate hat on the dog!

Oh, brilliant idea!

I was trying so hard to get shots with both eyes... this was the best I could do.. and, this was after I brushed the hair away!

The problem with #1 is that the bokeh is so close to the focal point of the eye.

I really love #2. It's got the best mix of composure, bokeh, etc....it's a great shot!

Really cute set of photos. How did you get the dog to close one eye only?

The dog naturally had one eye pretty obscured by hair. It was quite rare to get a glimpse of the hidden eye. I even tried to part the hair a bit to try and get both eyes in a shot or two.

I used a squeaker ball to get the dog's attention (for dogs, that's usually a 2 second window, if that!) and it tended to tilt it's head with the one eye forward.
