2 high key portraits, one accepted and one refused at the Pentax Gallery
Posted By: mikerigel, 09-14-2007, 04:56 PM

Here's 2 portraits of my friend's daughter... she's a sweetheart but man, she's hard to photograph!! She's worth trying though, even for just 3 or 4 good photos.
I told the mom I wanted to go with a very bright B&W look so she let me do what I wanted... and she loved it!
I submitted both to the Pentax photo gallery, but they only accepted one... can you guess which one ? (without cheating and go to the site )
Both taken with the DA* 50-135mm.

1/180s f/5.6 at 50.0mm iso100

1/750s f/4.5 at 95.0mm iso200

C&C welcome!

I would have picked number 1, so they probably picked number 2!

Ditto on the #1 - I think it is the eyes (well the one eye anyway) - stunning capture well done.

High key effect is too strong for my taste in #1, eyes are great in #2 so I am guessing #2.

Beautiful pics. I would say that #1 has to much clear/white foreground but the shot is beautiful and #2 fills most of the screen and is also beautiful so I pick #2.

Hey Mike. I'm really impressed with both of these shots. In my opinion, they both deserve to be in the pentax gallery. I particularly like #1 for the interesting contrast and #2 for the eyes. Great job with these.

I really love the way it turns out in number 1. The sharp edges and the high contrast image - sparkling!

Did you use find edges function and blend in a new layer on top of the original. Once submerge then desaturate?

Thanks for posting this wonderful high standard photo!

The second one without a doubt. The ultra sharp subject against a blurred background is a testiment to the Pentax camera. The facial expression suggests thought and wonder, while the slightly unruly hair suggests a playful child overall. This image might be improved slightly with a vertical composition instead of horizontal.

The facial expression in the first image, by comparison, almost suggests fear (my impression). There is also nothing (no background, etc) in a whole lot of the image. However, it is a very nice high-key exposure overall. This one might have won with a slightly different facial expression and a little less empty space (cropped or shot vertically perhaps). But, not matter what, the second would probably still remain my choice.
