Candid Portrait
Posted By: MRRiley, 09-20-2007, 05:31 AM

A candid portrait of Freda, my mother's best friend. I don't usually shoot portraits but when I saw the way the light was hitting her as she watched a concert in the park I just had to take advantage of it.

I was VERY pleased. Shot has been cropped ever so slightly and a vignette applied.

Mike, An excellent portrait. One of the better ones I've seen in awhile. The lighting is great (superb actually), not too many harsh shadows. Ecxellent job on the skin tones, nice warmth with out over doing it. Love the profile angle and sharpness of the image (some might like to see the far eye more or less but I think it works well). Even the vignette applied is good. I am just wondering if the vignette is just a tiny bit heavy on the forehead? I like it around the chin but would like to see the hairline just a bit better.

Maybe you should consider doing a bit more of this. Looks like you have a pretty good eye for it.

I was expecting 'Ho-Hum' what I got knocked me out of my seat. An excellent piece of work, my compliments! And gratitude as to your sharing it.

My turn to say WOW. Thanks for all the compliments guys! I was very lucky getting this as the light and everything came together just right. My good fortune to be there when it did.

I'm all for giving serendipity credit when it is due; it is, if we would all be honest about it, one of the best friends a photographer could ever have.

So I'll join with you in giving thanks to our common friend....and point out that serendipity only put the shot in your way. It didn't spot it, compose it, or shoot it. You did that, and I think we're all just a little better off for it.

Great portrait Mike: composition, lighting, profile, face detail and colours. You caught a really interesting expression. Which lens were you using?

I shot this with the K10D and the DA 50-200mm... at 180mm, f5.6, 1/60sec, hand-held with SR on.
