Hi Al, I saw this in another forum and think I commented on it. I love this photo. This on and your moths are definately pushing me and my wallet in the sigma direction.

I have been looking at the 70 macro too and the 90mm Tamron macro.

But this is really a good shot.
Thanks, Igilligan. I really like it as well. If I knew how well it was going to turn out I would have paid a little more attention to the background.

I don't know anything about the other macro lenses you mentioned, but I like my 105.

These are very good. I have never seen one of these, but hope to one day. The sigma 105 looks tack sharp here. Tough to do with a flying insect. Nice job.
Have you used the sigma 105 as a portrait lens?
I used to see a lot of the hummingbird moths. Your profile says that you live in Northern California, they do exist there (I live there). Almost all of them I've seen on summer nights, hovering around lamps. Only once in my entire life that I've seen one of the clear-wing species.

Great, now I have envy for a macro lens.

I live within 30 miles of Davis. And I grew up here collecting bugs/lizards/snakes. I have never seen one. How can that be? Play tennis at night and even with the giant lights... nada.

Thanks for letting me know they are here... I will increase my efforts. We have those flowers all over that they are on in these pics. Maybe it is all the cats in the area...

From what I have learned since seeing all the photos of them on here... in larvae form they are those bad tomato plant eating caterpillars. So I would assume you can find them near places that have tomato plants.

Well I do have a number of tomato plants (about 36), although I've never seen any bugs or caterpillers on them. I only see the hummingbird moths once or twice a year.

Nice!

Great shots, Al.

Last month I challenged other forum members to post shots of one of these moths, but no-one was able to get any.

Good work.

Thanks, Tom. I wasn't around last month or I would have posted these then.
