Thanks, Scott-devon. I went and wrapped the image links in standard html tags. All fixed now.

Nice shot, how far were you from the moth?

I used to have a clear-wing moth in an insect collection I did for a class, but then a rat somehow got in and destroyed a few things

Thanks, gerbilbox. I'd guess I was around 12 to 15 inches away when I shot these.

As I said earlier, I do like the photo, but one thing that I think could be improved is if the background was more blurry. I've never shot with a real macro lens before, I hope to, so I don't know how practical you could get with a wider aperture at your given distance to narrow down the DOF.

Nice shots Al. I haven't seen a lot of photos from the Sigma 105. Were you using the built-in flash, or something else?

BTW, welcome to the forum.

I agree that it would have been nice to have a shallower DOF. These things move around quite a bit so I need the extra DOF just to keep it in sharp focus. Since I only see them about twice a year, I don't get a lot of practice

Thanks, Chris. I was using my Sigma EF-500 flash for these.

Thanks for the welcome.

These are very good. I have never seen one of these, but hope to one day. The sigma 105 looks tack sharp here. Tough to do with a flying insect. Nice job.
Have you used the sigma 105 as a portrait lens?

Thanks, Igilligan. I never saw one before last summer either. I was shooting at f/18 in order to have enough DOF to keep it sharp while it moved from flower to flower.

Yes, I have tried it as a portrait lans and it seems to do a fairly decent job. Here's one that I took hand held a couple of weeks a go. The original was a tad sharper and there was a touch of surface blur applied.

Hi Al, I saw this in another forum and think I commented on it. I love this photo. This on and your moths are definately pushing me and my wallet in the sigma direction.

I have been looking at the 70 macro too and the 90mm Tamron macro.

But this is really a good shot.
