Retired Rail Switcher
Posted By: areidjr, 09-22-2007, 06:53 AM

This center cab rail switcher sits retired along an industrial strip in the town where ai live. I'm not sure why it sets there with out wheels or track.

I love the colors.

My only complaint, which you might have no control over is those blasted power lines

Thanks, Stu. I only noticed the power lines after I got home and processed the shots. Perhaps I should clone away the pole that's sticking up from the light.

Thanks, Edwin. I had been driving by it for years and finally decided to get a closer look and take some shots.

Nice shot! Ok, I am not knowledgeable on railway terminology. Can someone please tell me what specific function a rail switcher does compared to a regular locomotive? Thanks.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm not much of an expert on the subject either, but my quick research indicates that this piece of equipment is used in a rail yard to move cars around assemble to string of cars toat will be moved by the locomotive. They are also used in steel mills to move bullet cars and the like.

You're welcome. It was meant as a compliment for the photographer. Not so much for the truck driver who lost his cargo...

I don't think it's been lost, probably put there on purpose.

Nice little switcher, looks like it was probably used for the steel mills, seeing as nothing this size was ever used on the mainline railroads.

Being that it's sitting in SW Pennsylvania, it's quite possible that it was used in a steel mill. Not many mills left around these parts any more.

There were no markings anywhere to be found. I guess they were lost along with the wheels

and yes, GO STILLERS!
