Swim Meet
Lens: DA* 200mm F2.8 Camera: K-7 Photo Location: Indoor Swimming Pool ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F2.8

I took these shots at my son's latest swim meet. Given the low, artifical light and the speed of the swimmers, I'm not too disappointed. However, if anyone could give me some tips for better settings for the future for this lens, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Nice job on both pictures. Has there been any post processing performed. Something you might look to see if you like the change would be to reverse the images and have them be moving from left to right.

Good Job,

Jim

Good images, looks like you had dark conditions. Really, given those settings which look to be entirely appropriate, I'd think you have 2 options

1) Buy some good de-noising software like Topaz DeNoise or buy Lightroom which has de-noising built in
2) Buy a K-5, it gives you ~2 stops in improved noise over the K-7 (ie those ISO1600 shots would be like 6400 shots on a K-5). Actually a K-x is probably 1 or 1.5 stops better than the K-7 too, and a lot cheaper than a K-5.

Thanks for your comments. I'm afraid getting a K-5 is out of the question. For that matter, getting a Kodak X-15 from 1970 would be out of the question after getting this lens. My wife would KILL me!!! :-) I could look for some software, though. I have Helicon Filter, but it's just a free trial (these shots haven't had any of that done to them though)

Ha, look a K-x (which are going for <$400 second hand) would be better than a K-7 in low light by at least a stop. Lightroom is ~$300 (available for free 30 day trial) which as well as De-Noising has fantastic cataloguing and editting functions.

Niks Define and TOpaz Denoise are great denoising software plugins, but unfortauntely you need photoshop, lightroom or aperture to use these programs.

There is also Noise Ninja and Noiseware, I'm not sure if they are standalone or photoshop plugins though.

Happy researching

Why ISO 1600? You could have taken them with a lot lower ISO and not have half the noise.

What settings would you suggest though? The lens is already wide open, and the shutter is already at a reasonable 1/350 to freeze the action.

I'll try it on a little lower ISo next time, Pauld. Twitch, I'm afraid I can't justify spending $3-400 on anything camera related right now, or my wife will wallpaper our livingroom with my hide. However, I'd be happy to email you my address so you can send it to me! :-)

Noise Ninja is $35 stand alone.
