I would say the the focus is not on the fly, but on the leave, and flash is too strong..... there are refletions on the leave and the back is totally black

Perhaps reducing the flash power, or ussing a light diffussor might have improved the shot

Nice job eaglem. I've tried to shoot these guys repeatedly, I think I only got one or two decent captures. They don't tend to sit still long or let you get very close, and the coloration does not lend itself well to photographs. I usually get either too bright (and out of focus) or too dark and no detail can be seen.

Nice job, I know how hard it is to get a shot this good.

Thanks Pete, you're not wrong about these flies being skittish.

Josep there was no flash used, it was indirect sunlight so I was unable to turn it down a notch.
