Beijing at Night

Has anyone ever seen a Wong Kar-wai movie? He's one of my favourite directors, and his style (or actually his and his Cinematographer Christopher Doyle) is quite distinctive. A wide aspect ratio, lots of negative space with the background or foreground out of focus, nighttime scenes and bright colours.

For those not familiar: here is a trailer of one of this movies:

I've tried to reproduce his style, taking photos in Beijing at night. I've been at it for a couple of evenings now, and here are some results. More at www.kevinschoenmakers.nl

Really nice, a good transcription of the atmosphere of BJ by night.

Even if you've tried to recreate specific atmosphere, i think those look very original and are interesting to look at. Well done.

Thanks for posting these Kevin! Quite different from what we usually see. I'm in Japan and China for the next 10 days and hopefully will have some opportunity to shot as well.

Wow! I think you nailed it! Number three is stellar!

Personally I find this director boring but the films do have a nice style. I actually had to turn off In the Mood For Love, something I rarely do.

Oh, except for Chungking Express. I saw that when it came out and loved it. Saw it again recently to see if I was mistaken but no... great fun film.

Admittedly I find his movies hit and miss, though hit more often than miss, and they're always interesting. I love 2046, In the Mood for Love and Chunking Express, but Happy Together and As Tears go By I didn't like that much. Great cinematography is always a given though.
