Oh dear!
Posted By: Tom Lusk, 12-05-2006, 06:45 PM

I played hookey for a few hours before work this morning, preferring to take a little hike in the woods. We had a light snowfall last night, and I figured the deer would still be bedded down. I was right, and despite poor light, managed some decent shots of a buck and a few does:

I have spent so much time in the woods with deer over the past years, I actually have gotten to know a few quite well.

I like them all especially the 2nd and 3rd shots. They are truely sharp and well composed. As usual, enjoy seeing your nature photographs and passion for these wildlife

Are you the last of the Mohicans to be able to sneak that close to deer without spooking them or are you carrying a small bag of corn with you each morning?

Seriously good pictures. I love going out and catching wildlife. Two weekends ago we went for a long hike and saw a cow moose, doe and 6 grouse. The moose was within range of my friend's 300mm Nikon but with the low light he couldn't hand hold and get a clear picture such as you have here.

How about the details on the shoot?

Nice Shots

It's amazing how well insulated they are, the snow isn't melting off the bucks back. Also, from the broken tine on your bucks antlers there is probably another buck in there somewhere.
Great captures, what lens were you using?

I really like the last one, where the doe looks like she's trying to see around something, taking a closer look at you. How close were you? I have no feel for how a 300mm lens might fill the frame, my longest lens is 210 and I've hardly used it. Any cropping?

Hmmmm...

Good eye, Julie:

That doe had actually just spotted me and was trying to figure out what I was. She shifted her head to the side to get a different vantage point. Real suspicious.

Same as the buck in the third shot. He crouched low to get a clearer view. I was on my knees to see under a limb and get a clear shot, so I guess we both had the same idea.

These shots were all with my FA*300, from approx. 20 yards (used Tamron 1.4TC to get portraits). Slight crops on all, averaging 10%. Shot at f 5.6 @ 1/160th, ISO 400.

vievetrick- I gave up hunting about 10 years ago- I had gotten too good at it. No challenge any more.

Clarence- I've picked up a few tricks over the years that help me to get as close as possible to deer and other wildlife. Sometimes I stalk them. Other times I wait for them to to find me!
