Motorsport - K10D+Bigma - Who says Pentax doesn't do sport!
Posted By: blwnhr, 09-26-2007, 09:03 PM

Here are a couple of teaser shots taken with the Bigma and my K10D over the weekend. It was the final round of the Tasmanian drift series.

The drivers were screaming out for photos so I got together one of each driver. Here are a few of them. I'll post some better shots once I sort through them.

I was experimenting with shutter speeds, started at 1/350, then to 1/250 and finally 1/180. That is about as slow as I can go hand held @ 300-500mm. I was getting 50%-ish hit rate at 1/180, but was getting better as the day progressed.

I will admit the AF system wasn't as quick as I would have liked, but then again I shot most at the long end which is quite slow. I did use a Circular Polarizer at the start of the day but losing that extra stop KILLED the AF speed.

No EXIF, but details are basically K10D, Sigma 50-500, Tv-mode 1/180-250, ISO 200. All are uncropped in-camera JPEG with only slight level adjustments in PS CS2.

Nice shots! Looks like you had fun shooting this series.

(On another note, it makes me wish I was a tire salesman in Tasmania!)

I always wondered what the BIGMA would be like on the K10. I have been looking for a nice long lens. I love my old ones but I need AF
Keep up the great work!

i wondered when you were going to get around to tempting people with some motorsports shots using the Bigma in a Pentax mount! Nice shots, #1 is a real cracker!

Beauty eh ! Or that is a smoking series - well done. I was curious if any of these guys drift too much into a rollover ?

You'd need a really high center of gravity or some really weird tires to roll over at the kind of speeds drifters generally use.

Great shots!

Great job getting sharpness of subjects coming at you at a very rapid pace! A lesson I have yet to learn. (my problem is I hold pre-focus too long for no readily apparent reason. )

Love fast cars (as you can see if you look @ my kar krazy photo gallery) and love your shots!

Very nice set of shots there

Personally(from a person who drives as well as shoots) I like to see more of the angle shots...like this

Overall I really like them,

I'm not a huge fan of the tilt factor in someo f them and if it was me I would straighten them out.

Very well done, gives me some hope for the bigma

Thankyou for the comments. I was still coming to terms with the massive focal length of the Bigma and was experimenting fairly well. I have some more drift on on the 27th of October, look out for the photos.

I generally take horizontal photos, but was also shooting for a magazine and I notice that a lot of the shots they print are taken on an angle so I thought I would mix it up a bit to keep them happy.

I always wonder HOW you make these shots ?

do you follow the car when pressing the shutter release to have the car look sharp and the rest (road, grass, ...) out of focus (moved) ?

it must be really tough to find the exact speed and such to follow the car perfectly, or are you just using a very high shutter speed and not moving the camera (like the waterfall freeze ?).
