Start of Moose rutting season
Posted By: regken, 09-27-2007, 04:51 AM

Several people have asked when the rutting season starts. The cow won't let the bull closer than 30 or 40 feet right now so it is just starting. This poor old guy was asleep on his feet he was so tired. He followed her for a solid 2 hours while she ate. Her calf got tired of the whole thing and went into the woods to lay down. This was shot with a M42 200mm f4 lens. ISO 100 at 1/45 sec. I should have kicked the ISO up and used a smaller aperture, I think. This was cropped down to a 5.7mb file.

There was one Canon and two Nikon shooters there also. Each one of them had equipment worth more than my car. I got a chance to look through their view finders and was duly impressed. I doubt seriously if they were having any more fun then I was.

Hope you enjoy.

Ken

Been awhile has it? I couldn't resist a comment like that!!!

Good shot of these Moose. I think the old 200 served you well. It looks a tiny bit too green but otherwise a nice sharp picture that was well composed. Looks like you had just as much or more fun than the other shooters (cause you did well for way less $$$$). I was hoping to have some shots of these in Newfoundland but drove over 3000 kms and didn't see one, which is odd as it was hunting season and they are usually running all over the place away from the gunfire.
