Simple Shadows
Lens: DA 35L Camera: K20D Photo Location: My Back Porch

When I was much younger and shooting a lot of Tri-X, I spent a fair amount of time "studying" shadows. This morning's low (but bright) winter sun prompted me to grab my camera and look for shadows that interested me. Here's what I found; the names reflect what popped into my mind when I shot the pics:

Thanks much, Ash. I need to do more of this sort of thing - to "replay" my youth if for nothing else.

Your b/w images are so crisp and clear and with ever changing subject matter, I am going to give this a try. Thanks for sharing. Bob

Thanks for the very kind words, Bob. For sure, give a try - I'd think one of your Garden of the Gods pics would be great for conversion.

Thanks, JIM - that one is my favorite, as well.

These are nicely done Jer. The first one is my favorite with the aliens as my second.

Thanks much, Susan. In this case, the alien is pretty harmless (in fact, my wife made me water it yesterday afternoon).

Nice job with these. I like Alien Attack and Tagged Edge very much. Conversions went well, and they're crisply sharp.

Thanks much Dave, although I'm sorry for the allusion to such an unpleasant memory. When my wife saw this pic, she was surprised I that I didn't call it "Fire Phasers!".

Jer, hadn't thought about b/w conversions, you shot these in b.w right or were they converted? It seems like shooting in bw, the photos seem so much more accurate than converting, or maybe I am doing something wrong. thanks Bob

Bob, all my B&W pics are - in fact - conversions of RAW, color files. My basic approach is pretty simple (otherwise I couldn't do it): after any adjusting of brightness or contrast of the RAW image, I convert it to a high-quality JPEG and use the "Black and White Film" tool in PSP X to render the pic in B&W. This tool allows you to apply the basic B&W filters we all used to carry around (red, yellow, etc.); it also provides a brightness adjustment (to offset changes induced by the "filter") and something called a "Clarify" tool, which I think adds a combination of contrast and sharpness - typically I'll sparingly use both brightness and Clarify. I then drop the image size for posting and lightly sharpen a bit more. That's it.

Even though I'm shooting color RAW files, I generally (though not always) identify the pic as B&W before I hit the shutter button.
