Lens: M400 f/5.6 Camera: K200D Photo Location: Herdsman Lake and Lake Monger, Perth AU

Recently I have found myself getting back into a bit of bird photography. It didn't take me long to remember how difficult it really is, but here are a few species you may not have seen before.

Australian Hobby

Australian Shelduck

Great Crested Grebe

Australasian Grebe

White-headed Stilt

Curlew Sandpiper

Straw-necked Ibis

Australian White Ibis

Pink Eared Duck

Black-fronted Dotterel

Blue-billed Duck

Grey Teal

Great Egret

And of course, my states icon, the Black Swan:

Thanks for the "Grand Tour" of Australian water birds, Jason. Very nicely done - each and every one.

I hate to admit this, but I've always believed a black swan to be a mythical creature. Makes me feel kinda dumb (but I'm used to it). Happy New Year.

Hi Jer and happy new year. Hope your Christmas was enjoyable too.
Over here the novelty would be a white swan, as we only have the black ones!
These guys are rather common and are usually not very shy.

Thanks for the comment, cheers

Given the age of the lens, one supposes this is about the zenith of what can be achieved in the field with the Pentax-M 400 f5.6. Though I have used this lens from 1981, I don't think I have mastered its use with a digital camera yet. Very good pictures, congratulations.

Thanks for this series. I know so little about birds from your part of the world, and so I appreciate seeing these lovely photos. The Great Egret is my favorite, but they're all great.

Thanks chhayanat and Tamia.
I do believe that this lens can do a bit better, but it depends on the light conditions and the user, of course. I'm happy enough with the results I am getting though.
You're welcome Tamia. I figured that many of the northern hemisphere people may not have seen most of these birds.
However at least some of these can also be found in the north. The Curlew Sandpiper for instance breeds in Siberia. A pretty big trek hey?
Cheers, Jason.
