The Noon Gun in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

The noon gun in Halifax has been a feature of city life since it was first garrisoned by the British Army in 1749. The firing was timed for vessels in the harbour to set their chronometers by sight of the puff of smoke rather than the noise of the report, which took time to carry.

The present noon gun is a reproduction 12 pounder, smooth-bore muzzle loading gun used during the reign of King George III (1760-1820). It is fired by gunners of the 78th Highland Regiment dressed as the 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery of 1869, into which it evolved.

I have visited many of the forts throughout the USA and enjoyed looking at the big guns and fine ornate work on them, but have never seen one actually fired. I bet that is quite an experience. thanks Bob
