Toowoomba floods
Posted By: Ash, 01-10-2011, 05:03 PM

Toowoomba gets hit by severe flash flooding totally unawares on the 10th of January, 2011. High numbers of casualties, innumerable cars and properties destroyed and countless farms wiped out. We continually get warnings of ongoing severe weather in the area and the devastation is still going on...

'Instant inland tsunami' kills eight

Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley flash floods claim at least eight lives, dozens missing | Courier Mail

Death toll rises to eight | Toowoomba News | Local News in Toowoomba | Toowoomba Chronicle

These are photos I managed to take in the wake of the floods, still going on after over 100mm of rainfall fell over half an hour yesterday. These images do not show the extent of the flooding that immersed the city yesterday...

One of those freak events that no-one could have foreseen...

That's right Simon.
Revised flood toll is 8 confirmed perished, 66 missing.
All in Ipswich and Brisbane take extreme caution. 22m and 5.5m peaks respectively with more rain forecasted means widespread damage to come. Do everything you can to be prepared *now*.

We'll have to expect a level of mass hysteria.
All the best mate.

+1 from me. I have driven through Toowoomba many times on my way from Melbourne to the Gold Coast and back and have always liked the place.

Keep your heads up.

Richard.

Thanks Richard & Neil.
Unfortunately death toll has now gone to 9.
Murphy's creek at the foot of the Range is still in dire conditions at the moment and rescue efforts have had to be cancelled there. Many people stranded and still at risk of further flooding.
A grim couple of days thus far.

More from this morning's residual floods:

75% of the state of Queensland (nearly 1,300,000 sq km) declared a disaster zone.
Estimated 9,000 homes to be affected in Brisbane - Ipswich going under water.
10 lives confirmed claimed by the floods, now 78 said to be missing.
It's slowly settling down in Toowoomba, but there's still more rain falling.
Now the focus is on the Lockyer Valley and Brisbane.
Pray you all stay safe.

In WA we are experiencing 37+ with Bushfires today destroying several houses...the fire was deliberately lit....its a bloody crazy world

Ash, this is a sobering thread and graphically portrays what those of us elsewhere hear on the news. Best wishes to those of you who are in the affected region. Take care, guys.
