Toowoomba floods
Posted By: Ash, 01-10-2011, 05:03 PM

Toowoomba gets hit by severe flash flooding totally unawares on the 10th of January, 2011. High numbers of casualties, innumerable cars and properties destroyed and countless farms wiped out. We continually get warnings of ongoing severe weather in the area and the devastation is still going on...

These are photos I managed to take in the wake of the floods, still going on after over 100mm of rainfall fell over half an hour yesterday. These images do not show the extent of the flooding that immersed the city yesterday...

One of those freak events that no-one could have foreseen...

Very funny Arjay.

Perhaps an explanation for the freak storm that caused it all: Australia floods: what caused the flooding? - Telegraph

Current flood affected areas in Qld: Queensland floods - Google Maps

And halfway around the world, more of the same, only with a much greater death toll: Floods in Brazil claim over 400 lives

Thanks for showing us Ash. I would liked to have gone out and taken some shots here in Brisbane but decided to stay out of the way. To easy to become a problem. That long distance weather bloke they have on tv now and then was spot on with his predictions. He said there is a cycle of 72 years with a mini cycle at 36 years. He was spot on. It is 36 years since the one in 74 which i saw. I think the government did an amazing job in controlling the dam release. Could have been much worse. Feel sorry for the people in Brazil as well with over 400 dead from there flood.

Fortunately the peak didn't reach anywhere close to the devastating 1974 flood level, but now with all the newer infrastructure, the costs of recovery will be significantly greater.
