new arrival... I really like black on black
Posted By: Marc Langille, 10-07-2007, 09:09 AM

A new arrival late last week... hmmm, this is an interesting set of boxes... what have we here??

Basically it's brand new... one roll of film through it. This camera is a thing of beauty... sure looks nice with the lens...

Ahhh, the 77mm Liimited...

Back detail pose...

Final close up shot - stealth black is nice...

This camera has almost every function my K10-D has... it's amazing, although the P functions to set custom stuff takes a learning curve. I've got 6 slide film rolls: 3 rolls of Velvia 50, 3 rolls of Velvia 100F. Plus a roll of Superia 400 with it.

Now I have to decide on a scanning solution to digitize the images, since it will be used occasionally, not all of the time. This will be a great backup camera, and it can use my AF540FGZ flash - all functions!!

Cheers,
Marc

Yes indeed! It's a pretty setup, no question. To answer your question: I've been a boy scout, and work in the IT field.

BTW, I planned to burn all my images to DVD this weekend, and the external hard drive they're stored on is having problems... Seen in the BIOS but not in Windows. I've recovery software that cannot do anything, so off to the recovery lab it goes!

So much for backing up in time... grrr...

Regards,
Marc

Bugger !!! I hate that - good luck with the recovery. And for me the answer is yes to both - Any data I deem important for home I have at least 3 copies is the good news for work stuff I am much more anal. The bad news for the home stuff is all copies all stored within 15 feet of each other

That's a great looking piece of equipment. I wasn't paying much attention to things photographic for a few years before going digital, so I've never seen one. If you don't mind my asking, where did you get it and how much was it?

Using my DSLR's has generated a "backward" nostalgia for me and I am leaning towards MF equipment and maybe a 35mm rangefinder camera (last one I owned was a Voigtlander Vitessa L in 1959). Problem with this kind of thinking is that I'll have to start developing film again, get another scanner and probably a larger printer.

LBA, hell! There are cameras, scanners and printers out there to buy!

It's a beauty, no question. I'm amazed at the functions, and how well it handles with the grip. Need to review my old school stuff!

Most MZ-S units are sometimes available via auctions - most went for $600 --> $800 or more in the last few months. I stumbled across it on Ebay - Buy it Now for $499! That included the grip and 8 slide film rolls of Velvia - 3 x Velvia 50, and 4 x Velvia 100F, plus 1 Superia 400 ASA roll. It's basically brand new - only one roll of film was put through it...

Agreed - CBA is nice too...

I may buy that $500 Nikon film/slide scanner - let me know if you have any experience/suggestions for any particular scanner?

Cheers,
Marc

I am a little stressed!

The nice part is that I work in IT, and have access to a $1500 recovery software tool, so it's currently at 29GB recovered. The circuitry is quite hot, so hopefully it will last until everything's copied over to a new drive. Of course, to make things exciting, we're having electrical storms and power issues at work, despite having 2 generators that will each power 3000 homes...

After this, I get a RAID array or a Buffalo TeraStation. I'll burn everything to DVD this week too...

I have a Nikon Coolscan V ED that I use for 35mm film & slides. I think that it does a pretty good job; a bit of a learning curve here. Got it about three years ago and worked my way into digital by scanning negs and slides from my film days. Got an Epson printer (2200) at the same time and started to learn how to print. Then started shooting with a DS. then K10D. Am now thinking about a flatbed scanner for MF and another printer to get better B&W results.
My scanning technique is probably not as good as it could be, but I get adequate results. I don't think there are many choices around anymore in the Coolscan price range. It will take some time/effort to get going with this if you haven't had prior experience. If you get a Coolscan, try to get a filmstrip holder with it; holds negs flatter than the feeder that comes with the unit (if you find a supplier that has this accessory, let me know. I'm still searching for one). One of the big discussion points is which software to use;I've used the Nikon software only. Somewhere along the line I made the decision not to get too tied up with the scanning end because I also needed to fight my way through PS and printing. If I get a flatbed for scanning MF film, I'll probably get a bit more serious about it.
Best part of all of this for me is to be able to hold a good looking print in my hands without having spent hours in a smelly darkroom.

I use the Epson 4990 and love it- I have the lab leave my slide film uncut, then cut it myself into 5-frame strips and scan 20 at a time. I think it's goin for around 350-400 now that it was replaced by the v700 or something like that. It is a flatbed so you can do other formats plus flat art, documents, etc.

PS: you've got me really jealous right about now

Hmmm... good information to know!

LOL.. hey it's a very sharp looking camera! I'd be jealous too if it wasn't me!

The styling is really nice. I'm looking forward to shooting some of that slide film with it, but I'll keep it to landscape work, where the Velvia really shines. Of course, I have some expired regular film I may do something with, although it's 2006. Might be a little off, but we shall see!

Cheers,
Marc
