Center of the World
Photo Location: Felicity, CA
Posted By: Bob Harris, 01-18-2011, 09:42 PM

This is the town of Felicity, population of 2 that sits on 2800 acres, founded in the mid 80's, designed and built by Jacques-Andre Istel and named after his wife. The pyramid marks the center of the world as designated by the plaque's proclamation and this is a life long dream and venture of a man that escaped the Nazi's from France with his family, became a Marine and fought in the Korean War, is called the father of skydiving and authored several children's books. His recent addition to his town is the Church on the Hill, where 150,000 tons of dirt was brought in so the area residents would have a house of worship. The interesting part of this area is the 416 panel "History of Humanity" where individual engraved panels tell of the highlights of the collective memory of humanity. Besides being able to enter the pyramid and stand on the exact location of "The Official Center of the World", you can spend hours reading about events, history and famous people that have changed the world on the granite panels. Located on exit 164 off of the I-8 at Center of the World Drive. Shown also are steps taken from the Eiffel Tower when it was constructed in 1889 and an interesting plaque on the history of Yuma AZ. Our photos can not show the love, time and thought an individual has put into an area that preserves history for all time, for all to see and for all to learn. Felicity, a unique place to visit.

Never heard of this place, Bob, and thanks for this series. Fascinating place. I'll have to put it on my "must see" list. Would be interesting to be there in low light.

Thank you Susan, this is located right on the CA/AZ border off of the I-10, just in case you wander by after your trip to Alaska. Bob

Now this place is remarkable (and another place I've never been) - more remarkable is how well you've photographed it - each shot is very well conceived.

thanks Dave and Jer, this plaque proves it is the Center of the World, look at the bottom and you can see that it was recognized by France, that is good enough for me I guess.

Bob, your posts are always so interesting. This photo spread is really well done. I have not heard of Felicity, thanks for posting and explaining the history. I can tell from your words that you were very moved by the experience of being there... I can feel it thru the images too. Your nomadic lifestyle is such a grand way to experience the world. Thanks for sharing some of it here... always a highlight for me.

Unless they moved it, I think it is off the I-8, on the way to Yuma.
