Niagara Falls In Winter
Lens: Pentax 18-250 Camera: Pentax K7 Photo Location: Niagara Falls State Park ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/60s Aperture: F16

The Falls are beautiful in the winter. Unfortunately, most visitors come during the warmer months. It was cold ( 6* ) that morning, and as I was heading out freezing, the last pic shows "old man winter" seemingly laughing at me.

Thanks for looking.

I think more should visit during the winter after seeing these. Love the last one. JIM

These are exceptionally good images. I've never seen the falls in the winter - what a sight!

The last shot is lots of fun.

Great stuff.

The falls are just an hour or so down the road yet I've never seen them in winter.

Its just silly to have one of the Seven Wonders of the World so close and not take time to visit once in a while.

I'll have to make time for a day trip soon. Thanks for sharing.

You really capture the bitter cold and the extraordinary beauty of the area in winter. Well done.

Baby it's cold up there. The landmark that is constantly moving backward, due to the wearing away of the lip of the falls caused by water erosion.

I like the second one. You managed to capture the cold very well. The last one is just cute. Good eye.

Until 1905 the falls eroded 3.8 feet per year. From 1906 to 1927 it was down to 2.3 feet per year. Today, because of the International Control Dam, the Horseshoe Falls erodes at 1 foot every 10 years. The American Falls is eroding at 3-4 inches every 10 years. From April 1st to October 31st there is a water flow of at least 100,000 cubic feet per second. At night they turn it down to 50,000 cubic feet per second. In the winter it is always 50,000 cubic feet per second. The normal flow rate of the river is 212,000 cubic feet per second, so even in the tourist season at least half the water is being diverted for power generation.

Wonderful shots - wish I could go visit! I really like the first shot's inclusion of the empty viewing deck with one solitary line of footprints in the snow - it really shows hte visitor "drought" :-)
