Salvation Mountain
Photo Location: Niland CA

Meet Leonard Knight, giving a thumbs up, who started building and painting this offering to Jesus Christ in the mid 80's. A native of Vermont and Korean War Veteran, he received God in his heart after a life altering experience and wanted to share the glory of God with all that pass through this arid desert area. The mountain is about 30 feet high and 300 foot in length and built with molded clay and bales of hay. He lives on site in his truck and all materials are donated or he uses donations to make purchases of items needed. Leonard is a very friendly man, and a bit eccentric, and is simply promoting God and the Bible in his own way. Salvation Mountain is located at the entry of the "slabs" off of E.Beal St. near Niland, CA.

If Jesus likes pastels, I'm sure he is well pleased? I won't go any further, P&R is no longer my topic of choice. Some over there found religion, some politics, but I found Pizza & Hot Wings along with some lovely young girls to model for me. I'm sticking where I'm at, I think I was the winner.......LOL!

Nice shooting, I will say that. Good exposures on what looks to be a very bright day.
Best Regards!

Certainly a unique part of the world...
Pretty clever - colourful and quite a feat.
Thanks for sharing.

Salvation Mountain is a great place to visit, but rather difficult to explain. I've been there a few times, and have had the pleasure of a personally guided tour from Leonard on more than one occasion. To say he is "eccentric" is probably understating it a bit, but truly, this is not something to miss.

I would imagine that you wandered through Slab City while you were there, and hopefully saw the 2 concrete water tanks with the murals painted all the way around them. Those murals seem to be constantly evolving. Some of the graffiti on the other concrete structures is quite creative as well.

Amazing dedication and what color! This guy's a long way from us main-stream Presbyterians, who do everything by committee.

You do get around Bob. Thanks for sharing these. Interesting bit of Americana. By the way, we are headed to Alaska this spring. Want to come?

Hey Rupert, if Jesus would have had Pizza and Hot Wings for his last supper there would be more people in church these days. When your wife catches on (You ain't foolin me!) you will have had your last supper!

thanks for taking time to view and comment, I was surprised that two of you had visited the area, it is quite remote, but worth the trip expecially if you visit the "slabs" area. That is a different world. Here is another of the mountain. Bob

No, not at all, those show different views I didn't have. The first one really shows how remote this is. I lost the photos of the "slabs", thanks for adding these. Bob
