What happened to the detail?

That is the detail. The whole altar is much larger.

The way I see it there is no detail at all in the lower half of the photo. The top is not much better.

You could say "portion of..." rather than "detail of..."

I know what you meant, though. Too bad the flare sort of washes out the "detail" of the subject, which is what I assume Sparkle is commenting about.
