Homemade Pinhole Self Portrait
Camera: A box
Posted By: Tomzee93, 01-22-2011, 05:22 PM

We've started off my high school photography class by making pinhole cameras and developing the images, and it's been a blast! Today my dad and I stocked up on developing chemicals, dusted off his equipment, and I spent the day taking and developing more pinhole images. I thought I'd share a 45-second self portrait I took in my backyard. Please excuse the finger prints, haha

I absolutely love working in the dark room; I can't wait to start using 35mm negatives along with the photograph paper!

That sounds like an extra cool thing to try. But I bet next time you don't stand in front of a bright, reflective window.

Great effect - looks like a multi-exposure shot.
Thanks for sharing.

It always amazes me when I see the younger generation falling in love with something from the past. I am impressed and wish you many hours of enjoyment. It is bound to make you a better photographer in the end. I like the effect you managed to achieve with the shot and hope you will post a few more as you go along.

digging up this thread....

Reminds me of when my art teacher in school borrowed me a wooden (!) large format camera. I believe it was actually from the days of large format.

My father and I went to a nearby castle with a park near Berlin and took ten pictures or so. It took us the whole afternoon. One of those unforgettable days.

I shot on regular B/W photo paper (ilford?) and contact-developed them in the school's darkroom. They must be somewhere.... Maybe in a box in my parents cellar. Will check when I'm there over christmas.

It would be nice to hear of progress made since then by the OP, and how this pin-hole experience affected efforts with more modern cameras.
