Macro European Wasps

These guys have been drinking from my bird bath lately. At one point there was four of them drinking from the same crack in the bird bath. I'm fairly sure there is a nest across the fence as that's where they fly off to when I interrupt them.

Nasty little buggers and they look so much like the paper wasp

Yeah, I was pretty careful around them. They were circling me quite a bit, I was trying to not make them feel threatened.

I think European Wasps are just a bit stockier than paper wasps, and they have those black dots running down their backs which paper wasps don't.

They are a plague in Australia these days, we have heaps of them in Tassie. If you can find the nest (usually a hole in the ground), note where it is & come back after dark with a petrol container. Pour a good measure down the hole & then stamp in the entrance so it is sealed. Bye bye wasp nest!
